Open Letter to Congress and World Leaders

Writer: Astrid OwenAstrid Owen

I am writing to you today because we are in the middle of a climate crisis. Today, across the south, the Mid-Atlantic, and many other regions in America, we are being scorched with unprecedented levels of heat. Here in Hampton Roads, it hit 98º with a HI of 110º.

Our friends in Canada are still burning, our friends in Greece are burning, and our friends in England are burning at almost 100º, even though they are further north than we are in Virginia. Our friends in Brazil, who should be enjoying a cooler climate right now, are not enjoying that. Instead, they are suffering the same temperatures we are. And this is across the world.

We are losing the arctic and antarctic ice caps. We're losing people daily from heat stroke and heat exhaustion. Our friends in the east are dealing with monster typhoons flooding their homes out.

We need to stop pretending the world isn't on fire and we need to act. After yesterday's UN conference where they have described this new level of climate change as "global boiling", we need to take action NOW. We are in dire need of action, and we need to press corporations to do their part to help reduce the global temperatures. They do not seem to understand or realize that if we burn, they will too. And nothing will matter anymore.

Please, press corporations to do the right thing. My generation, which is Gen Z, is about to lose our future because the climate crisis is...well...in crisis!
